Our History

A Legacy of Opportunity Through Work

Goodwill Industries began with a simple but powerful idea in 1902 in Boston, Massachusetts. Reverend Edgar J. Helms, a young Methodist minister, arrived in Boston’s South End and saw hardworking immigrants struggling to find jobs, learn the language, and build stable lives. Rather than offering charity alone, Helms believed in something more lasting—the dignity of work.

He began collecting gently used clothing and household goods from wealthier neighborhoods, then trained and employed individuals in need to repair and restore those items. The goods were resold or returned to the people who prepared them, creating both income and opportunity. From that idea, Goodwill’s enduring philosophy was born: a hand up, not a handout—a belief that continues to guide us today.

Goodwill in Central Alabama

Goodwill Industries of Central Alabama, Inc. (GICA) was established in 1968 in response to a growing need for workforce development services in the River Region. Our founding followed a community needs assessment conducted by the organization now known as the River Region United Way, formerly the United Appeal Agency. Since our beginning, GICA has remained an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, dedicated to creating employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities and others facing barriers to work throughout Central Alabama.

Part of a Global Goodwill Network

GICA is a proud member of Goodwill Industries International (GII), headquartered in Rockville, Maryland. GII serves as the Member Service Center for local Goodwill organizations across the country, providing guidance, collaboration opportunities, and oversight of the trusted Goodwill brand. While each local Goodwill operates independently, all share the same commitment to integrity, accountability, and mission-driven impact. Across the global Goodwill network, someone earns a job every 45 seconds of every business day—and we’re proud to contribute to that impact right here in Central Alabama.

A Social Enterprise with Purpose

Goodwill Industries of Central Alabama operates as a social business enterprise, using revenue generated through our retail stores, contracts, and services to fund job training and employment programs. Donated goods are sold in our retail locations, and the proceeds are reinvested directly into workforce development services that help individuals build skills, confidence, and independence. Today, GICA employs more than 200 team members, with over 75% of total hours worked performed by individuals with documented disabilities—a reflection of our continued commitment to inclusive employment.

Moving Forward Together

For more than a century, Goodwill has proven that when people are given opportunity, support, and meaningful work, lives change—and communities grow stronger. At Goodwill Industries of Central Alabama, that belief continues to guide us as we build brighter futures, one job at a time.
